Frequently Asked
Questions

What is the difference between an electrician and an electrical contractor?

There is a difference between an electrician and electrical contractor. An electrician is a worker who specializes and is qualified to do tasks related to electrical systems. They have completed an apprenticeship and courses.  An electrical contractor is the person or company that hires electricians. They must study longer and pass more exams than an electrician. Most of the time, both are licensed and insured. But an electrical contractor will always only employee licensed electricians.

What do electrical contractors do?

An electrical contractor can be an individual or a business firm that does work related to electrical systems. This includes but is not limited to design, maintenance and installation. There are three main types of electrical contractors. Outside electrical contractors, also known as line contractors work with the distribution lines. An inside electrical contractor does electrical work inside a property, such as outdoor lighting. An integrated building systems or Voice/Data/Video electrical contractor work with wireless networks, telecommunications and more.

What types of industry do you provide work for?

We perform and carry out projects for commercial, industrial, and residential customers. Varying from homeowners, landlords, retail premises, restaurants, main contractors and commercial premises, industrial, and government facilities.

Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?

Yes!  And we are glad you asked…no matter who you end up hiring, make certain the contractor is licensed, bonded, and insured!  We carry general liability insurance, bonds, and worker’s compensation insurance. We are licensed or can get licensed in most cities in the DC Metropolitan area.

Why is electrical safety important?

Workplace safety is something that every company needs to make a top priority. There are many types of hazards that exist, and in general they are all just covered under the generic topic of workplace safety. Interestingly, electrical safety is often addressed separately by many businesses. Some people wonder why electrical safety is so important, and why it gets so much attention. There are many statistics and facts that can provide some insights into what makes electrical safety stand out when it comes to the efforts that are made to improve safety.

Does VMEL charge for estimates?

We are willing to estimate your electrical project for free when you know what needs installed, repaired, upgraded or new construction.  However, troubleshooting unknown electrical issues is an hourly rate with a minimum service charge of two hours.  In our experience, it takes more time to locate the problem than repair it, so we do our best to repair it while we are called out to look at your problem.
